As we move towards the end of 2019, and if it was not clear before, a topic that seemed to have received a lot of attention across the Caribbean region this year, is digital transformation. However, the conversation has not been limited to the country-level digital transformation, but it appears to have trickled down to organisations, where there has been a growing imperative to streamline operations, increase productivity, whilst still being responsive to their customers, shareholders and industry. Hence for the November 2019 Community Chat, although it appears that we have two disparate two topics to discuss, they both leverage and require countries and organisations focus on realising a digital transformation.

Our first topic, “The Caribbean as a great interrupter in the Data Economy”, which was submitted by Elise Grace Jones. Originally from the United States, but currently based in Trinidad and Tobago, Elise is the Founder of Glide Technologies Group, which advises and offers their clients a broad range of digital solutions. She has a background in web development and business analytics, and has worked in the tech industry, and for academia and the Government.

In tabling , “The Caribbean as a great interrupter in the Data Economy”, Elise wanted us to explore the competitive advantages we enjoy in the Caribbean region. Accordingly, she is of the view that we need to set a stake in the ground and redefine the forefront of data transformation.

That first conversation focussed on Caribbean countries, but the second, sought to draw attention to not only businesses and organisations, but more importantly, to the employees. “The impact mobile app development in the workplace”, was submitted by Steven Jemmott, an experienced software developer, particularly for mobile/cellular applications, who also a Director of the City of Bridgetown Co-operative Credit Union, in Barbados.

In setting the context for that discussion, it is important to appreciate that mobile applications should not be considered solely when an organisation wishes to engage customers more. It can also be used effectively within the organisation – particularly among its teams and staff – to increase  productivity, and to optimise processes and workflows.
